Cisco UDN is currently available only in M-Street, Nutt, and University Commons as an Early Access initiative. As such, there may be issues that arise or bugs. We ask that you please report any issues that you encounter and we thank you for your patience while we report them to Cisco and work through them. |

What is Cisco UDN?
At home, all of your devices are on a single network which is separate from the network that your neighbors have. Because of this, all of the devices on your network are able to see and communicate with each other but you can’t see your neighbor’s devices or they yours.
When you join one of the ATU networks, this changes. The wireless and wired ports in each residence hall are part of a larger shared network for the entire building and each student’s devices can then natively see and communicate with each other.
From a privacy and security perspective, this can be an issue. Say that you want to connect to a streaming device from your mobile phone… when you open an app and attempt to specify the device to stream to, you may end up seeing dozens of devices. Selecting the wrong one may mean you end up streaming to someone else’s device. You can apply this example to a number of home and entertainment devices including laptops, printers, game consoles, home automation devices, etc.
Cisco User Defined Networks (UDN) is designed to solve this issue. While your devices are still connected to the same building networks as before, devices registered in the UDN app under your account join a virtual room. Devices inside this virtual room can all see and communicate with each other but, by default, cannot see or communicate with devices registered to virtual rooms belonging to other students. If desired, permissions can be given within the app to provide access to your virtual room to devices belonging to people you trust.
With Cisco UDN, a student can have a similar network experience to what they would have at home even while connected to the larger building network.
Getting Started with Cisco UDN for Apple iOS
Cisco UDN can be downloaded and installed from the Apple Store here.
To get started:
- Download and install the Cisco UDN app for Apple iOS from the Apple store link above. You must be on iOS 12 or newer.
- Open the app. You should be asked for your email address. Please enter your ATU email address here.
- You should be redirected to the ATU Single Sign-On page. Enter your ATU credentials.
- Once the DUO prompt is approved, you should be signed in with your ATU credentials.
- The “Add Devices” page is displayed when you login for the first time or when there are no devices or guests.
Registering Your Devices
If you’re trying to add a mobile phone to be used in your private network, by default most modern phones use “MAC randomization” or “Private addressing” so that the device generates a different MAC address for every wireless network it connects to. We recommend you disable this feature in the wireless settings for each ATU wireless network you wish to use the device on. When disabled for a given wireless network, the phone’s real MAC address will be used when joining. If you do not do this, you may need to add the phone in UDN multiple times, once for each wireless network you want to use and using the specific MAC address it generates for each. |
On iOS, you have several methods to add new devices:
- Manually entering each MAC address
- Use the camera in the app to take a picture and scan of a device’s MAC address
- If you’re not already on the Devices page, click on it from the menu.
- Click the + in the top right hand corner to add a device
- This should open the Manual Entry option. From here you can either enter the device information in manually or you can click the “Scan MAC Address” link at the bottom of the form which should allow you to either take a picture a MAC address displayed on a screen or of a MAC address bar code printed on a sticker on the device. You may need to grant camera permissions and location permisstions to register a device in this way.
- Once the device type has been specified, a description added, and the device’s MAC address has been entered, you can click Next.
- The Summary page shows all of the devices you’re about to register. You can either select “Add More Devices” to fill in registration information for additional devices or select “Submit” to register any devices already entered.
- A confirmation page will indicate the device, or devices, have been submitted for registration.
- Once full registered, the device, or devices, should show up in the list on the Devices page under the “In my room” section.
Edit or Removing Your Devices
To Edit or Remove one or more of your devices, go to the Devices page in the menu and click on the device you’d like to edit or remove.
The device’s information page will appear including the Device Type it was registered as, the Name/Description, the MAC address, and the registration status.
You can edit the Device Type or Name only by clicking the Edit button in the top right-hand corner. If the MAC address is incorrect, you’ll need to delete the device and then go and register it again.
On the same page where you can find the Edit button, a Delete button can be found at the bottom. Pressing this will popup a confirmation window asking if you’re sure you’d like to delete the device. Deleting it will take a few moments for it to de-register from the system and it will then disappear from any of the lists under Devices.
Managing Guests to Your Room
There may be times where you’d like to add a guest to allow them access to your devices.
- Navigate to the “My Guest” option in the menu.
- From here you can see the existing guests you’ve already invited. You can add a guest by clicking the + in the top right-hand corner.
- Search the guest you’d like to add by entering their first name. The user you’d like to add must have already signed in to UDN for them to appear in the search results. Select the user or users you want to add and select “Next”.
- The “Invite Guests” view shows a list of all of the guests you’re about to invite. Click “Invite Guests” to proceed.
- The guest, or guests, you invited must now go onto their own Cisco UDN app and find the invite in the Notifications view which can be accessed in the UDN menu. They should see a pending notification for your invite and they can Accept, Decline, or Cancel and decide later. Once accepting, they’re given the option to select which if their devices they want to be able to access your room.
- Once they’ve approved it and selected the devices they want to participate in your room, they should show up in the “My Guest” view in your UDN app. Selecting their name there should show you all of the devices that they’ve added to participate in your room and you can choose to remove them if needed. Navigating to “Devices” from the menu should also show you their devices listed in the “In my room” section.
If you add some of your devices to another student’s room via an invite they sent you, you should see those devices in a separate section in the “Devices” view called “In another room”.
