Wireless Assistance

To get connected with an Android mobile device, please follow the steps below.  These steps should only be required for a first-time connection or if you’ve cleared the ATU-Wireless network settings by choosing “Forget Network”.

Step 1
Open your wireless settings and find ATU-Wireless.  It should show an icon indicating it is a secured wireless network.  Click on ATU-Wireless to start the connection process.

Step 2
After clicking on ATU-Wireless, the connection settings page will appear.

Step 3
In the “Identity” field, put in your ATU username, in the “Password” field, enter your ATU password, and in the “Select certificate” field, choose “Use system certificates”.  This will expand several options.  In “Online certificate status” choose “Request status” and under “Domain” enter “atu.edu”.

**Note**
If you have an older Android phone, you may not have the option to “Use system certificates”.  You can try to use “Do not validate” instead in which case you won’t get the additional options and won’t have to enter anything for “Online certificate status” or “Domain”.  “Do not validate” may disappear in future Android versions so we recommend not using it if you have the “Use system certificates” option.

Step 4
Under “Advanced” we recommend you change “MAC address type” to “Phone MAC”.  By default, your phone uses a randomized MAC address to connect to the network for privacy.  Changing this to “Phone MAC” uses the MAC address of your phone instead.  Changing it on this page only changes it for this network so, when connecting to non-ATU networks, your MAC should still be randomized.   Using the phone’s MAC address helps during any troubleshooting and may be required for some network features to work.  This setting can also be changed after the connection is made.

Step 5
Once all of the settings are entered, click “Connect”

If everything was configured correctly and your username and password were correct, the device should now connect to ATU-Wireless.  You should only have to do this full setup on the first time connecting to each 802.1x network on campus. 

If your password has recently changed, you’ll need to update your credentials for these networks in your Android connection settings by doing the following.  If you don’t, Android may show that it is trying to connect to the ATU-Wireless network over and over but never succeeding.

Step 1
First, make sure your device is not attempting to connect to ATU-Wireless.  If it is trying to connect, it may not show the menu you need to access in the next step.  If it is automatically trying to connect, it should eventually time out.  You can also attempt to connect to another network in range temporarily to force it to stop trying to connect to ATU-Wireless.

Step 2
Once the device is not connected or trying to connect to ATU-Wireless, find it in the list of networks and press and hold on ATU-Wireless until the menu appears.  Once it does, choose “Manage network”.

Step 3
The next screen will allow you to update your account credentials.  The rest of the settings should already be set based on how you set it up when first connecting.  Once your account credentials have been updated, click “Save”.

You should now be able to connect to ATU-Wireless again.

To get connected with an Apple mobile device, please follow the steps below.  These steps should only be required for a first-time connection or if you’ve cleared the ATU-Wireless network settings by choosing “Forget Network”.

Step 1
Open your wireless connection screen and find ATU-Wireless and select it.  It should show as a secured network with the lock symbol next to it.

Step 2
You will be prompted for your username and password.  Enter your ATU username and password in their appropriate fields here and then press “Join”.

Step 3
The next screen will ask you to verify the security certificate.  Please verify that the certificate ends with “.atu.edu”.  In the screenshot below, you can see the certificate name is “ise-ms.atu.edu” which ends with “.atu.edu” so it is valid.  Once you’ve verified, press “Trust”.

You should now be connected to ATU-Wireless.

We recommend turning off Private Addressing for ATU networks.  By default, your phone uses a randomized MAC address to connect to the network for privacy.  Turning this feature off uses the MAC address of your phone instead.  Changing it on the settings for a specific network only changes it for that network so, when connecting to non-ATU networks, your MAC should still be randomized.   Using the phone’s MAC address helps during any troubleshooting and may be required for some network features to work. 

Step 1
To change it find ATU-Wireless again in your connection settings and press the “i” information symbol next to it.

Step 2
Find the “Private Address” option and turn it off.  The MAC address on the next line should update to show your phone’s MAC address instead of the randomized one.

Step 3
The change should be automatically saved when you turn the feature off.  A pop-up window should appear asking you to rejoin the network with the changed settings.  Press Rejoin.

You should now be connected with the updated settings.

To get connected with a Chromebook device, please follow the steps below.  These steps should only be required for a first-time connection or if you’ve cleared the ATU-Wireless network settings by telling your device to forget the network.

Step 1
In the wireless list, locate “ATU-Wireless” and click on it to start the connection process.

Step 2
After selecting “ATU-Wireless”, the “Join Wi-Fi network” setup window should appear.

Step 3
In the setup window, the SSID should say “ATU-Wireless” and the security should already be set to “EAP”.  Enter the following information in the remaining fields (you may have to scroll down to see them all):

EAP method: PEAP
EAP Phase 2 authentication: MSCHAPv2
Server CA certificate: Default
Domain suffix match: atu.edu
Identity: Type in your ATU account username here
Password: Type in your ATU account password here

You can leave “Save identity and password” enabled but please remember that you’ll need to go into this configuration and update your password after your account password changes.

Step 4
Click “Connect” once all of the above setting are entered.  You should now be connected to ATU-Wireless.

To get connected with a Mac device, please follow the steps below.  These steps should only be required for a first-time connection or if you’ve cleared the ATU-Wireless network settings by choosing “Forget Network”.

Step 1
In the wireless list, locate “ATU-Wireless” and click on it to start the connection process.

Step 2
You should be prompted for authentication.  Please enter your ATU username and password.

Step 3
Once your username and password are entered, press “Join”

Step 4
You’ll be asked to verify the certificate for ATU-Wireless.  The certificate name should be “ise-ms.atu.edu” and you can optionally click the “Show Certificate” button to view further information.  One you’ve verified, click “Continue”.

Step 5
You may be prompted by a security prompt to approve the certificate trust by entering your password or by using your biometric login.

Step 6
Once you’ve approved the security prompt by entering your password or using your biometric login, your Mac should trust the certificate and finish the connection.

Please note that when your ATU password is changed, the credentials to connect to this network will be invalid and need to be updated.  Mac should detect this and prompt you on your next connection attempt.

To get connected with a Windows device, please follow the steps below.

Step 1
Open up the Wifi available networks and find ATU-Wireless.  It should show a secured wifi icon next to it and say “Secured” when selected.  Once selected, click “Connect”.

Step 2
You should be prompted for your username and password.  Enter your ATU account credentials here.  Click “OK” once you’ve entered your ATU username and password.

Step 3
The next screen is a warning to verify whether you expect to see this wireless network at the location you’re at and to choose whether to verify the certificate and connect or not.  For security, we recommend that you click “Show certificate details”.

Clicking “Show certificate details” will expand a section that shows the certificate information.  For security, please verify that the name contains “.atu.edu” at the end which shows that it is a certificate issued to ATU.  In the example screenshot below, you can see that the certificate was issued to “ise-ms.atu.edu” which is valid since it contains “atu.edu” at the end.

Step 4
Once you’ve verified the certificate, click “Connect”.

You should now be connected to ATU-Wireless.

Please note that when your ATU password is changed, the credentials to connect to this network will be invalid and need to be updated.  Windows should detect this and prompt you on your next connection attempt:
