Internet Safety During Tax Season

Yes, I know, taxes are the last thing you want to think about. But it’s something we all have to do, so we might as well take the time to put some thought into it! Electronic filing of taxes is popular, especially this year with all the changes to the traditional tax season, but you do need to be mindful of what you share and how you share your personal information!

I’ve collected some good resources to look at when it comes to internet safety during tax time! Here, take a look!

https://www.cisa.gov/tips/st15-001
https://er.educause.edu/blogs/2020/3/march-2020-bonus-post-dont-let-tax-scams-be-taxing

https://er.educause.edu/blogs/2020/2/february-2020-protecting-electronic-payments

I hope you’ve learned something from those posts! Please do not email anyone your social security number, your bank account information, your W-2 even! If you get your W-2 electronically, it should be a download that comes from a secure sight to your computer, that you can then upload to a secure sight (if you file yourself online) or print if you take it in to a professional! If you get that gut feeling that you might not want to send something unsecured, don’t!

Please feel free to reach out to us, your ATU OIS Information Security office, if you have any questions about internet safety! We would love to help answer your questions, before you need our help!
