Residence halls and apartments provide high-quality access to information technology by maintaining a computer network. This computer network is called ResNet. Through this network, students who own computers can access the Internet while living in the Arkansas Tech residence halls/apartments.
Each ResNet connection port is assigned to a designated user. ResNet users are responsible for all network traffic originating from their connections. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Web Browsing
- File Transfers
- Connections to other machines
ResNet users are expected to follow all policies outlined in the Arkansas Tech Student Handbook (www.atu.edu/studenthandbook), Office of Information Systems, Department of Residence Life and DMCA policies regarding the use of computing equipment. Additionally, ResNet users must be aware that:
- ResNet is a single point of service for the resident. It is intended for the use of a single computer per port/resident. It is also intended to be for the use of the resident to access and use the internet or campus resources for his or her own personal use. No commercial or server-type services are authorized.
- ResNet must be used in accordance with all copyright laws. This includes, but is not limited to, illegal downloading of any kind (such as copyright infringement through the use of file-sharing or peer-to-peer (P2P) software.
- Residence wiring, communication services, and other hardware may not be modified or tampered with in any way. This includes attempting to extend the network beyond the area of its intended use (For example, installing hubs, switches, routers (wired or wireless), network printers (wired or wireless), or a Remote Access Server).
- Harassment of other users by any method is prohibited.
- ResNet cannot be used to misrepresent or hide your personal identity. (For example, ResNet may not be used to send e-mail from a fake address, or from any account that is not your own).
- ResNet users may not use a static IP address. Instead, users should configure their computers to use DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol), which will generate a specific IP address and provide appropriate DNS server addresses.
Violation of any of these conditions may result in any or all of the following:
- Suspension or loss of ResNet usage privilege.
- Suspension or expulsion from the University Residence Halls and Apartments.
- Sanctions as outlined in the Student Code of Content.
- Criminal charges.
ResNet users are also expected to be responsible network citizens. ResNet is a shared resource. As such, users should refrain from using any application which may interfere with the use of the network by others.
As a final note, think of your personal computer as your computing home. It is advisable to “lock the front door” so that people cannot use your machine without your supervision. Using a password when your computer initially starts or a screen saver password are good ways to control access to the information on your computer and your computer’s access to ResNet.
