Impact of Apple’s recent changes to iOS mobile device push notifications on Cisco Jabber and Webex Teams

Starting Saturday, August 1st, 2020, Apple has made changes to the push notifications for iOS 13 mobile devices. For those staff and faculty that have chosen to utilize their iPhone or iPads for answering phones with either Jabber or Webex Teams, this change may have a negative impact on incoming call notifications and messages.

The Office of Information Systems is investigating changes and upgrades to the university’s Unified Communications (VoIP) System to resolve this issue but currently does not have an ETA when these changes or upgrades may be applied. Given the recent importance of remote work/communications as well as the importance of the university’s phone systems during registration periods, the Office of Information Systems wants to make sure the necessary changes/upgrades can be applied with as minimal impact as possible

In the meantime, OIS recommends any staff or faculty that is currently using an Apple mobile device to answer phones remotely may want to consider installing Jabber or Webex Teams on their home desktop/laptop, or on a work laptop they are using at home if they have access to one, and utilize those as their remote phone. Any Windows or Mac desktop or laptop should work as long as the device has a connected microphone and speakers so the user can be heard and can hear the person on the other end of the call.
