The Russellville and Ozark campus’ lost Internet connectivity due to an unprecedented double outage event from our Internet Service provider.
The result of the event caused the ARE-ON network to be unreachable from the Internet and Internet2 for about 1 hour and 12 minutes, from midnight (12:00 am) on Thursday 9/10/2020 until 1:12 am Thursday morning. Here is a timeline of the events:
12:26 pm Wednesday 9/9/20 – CenturyLink experiences a cable cut in Texas. ARE-ON traffic reroutes through Tulsa.
12:00 am Thursday 9/10/20 – MBO starts their maintenance in the Tulsa area, breaking our path to Tulsa.
1:12 am Thursday 9/10/20 – CenturyLink completes repair to their cable in Texas. ARE-ON’s path to our Dallas router is restored and ARE-ON is again reachable. ARE-ON traffic to Tulsa is rerouted through Dallas.
1:24 am Thursday 9/10/20 – MBO completes their maintenance and ARE-ON path is restored to Tulsa. ARE-ON traffic is fully restored with both paths to our providers working.
During the outage, access to multiple campus resources was unavailable (OneTech, Blackboard, Office365). Also, note that other internet to internet services may have been inaccessible due to DNS access issues caused by the AREON outage.
