Several universities across the US report receiving scam emails after the banking shortages this weekend. The Office of Information Systems would like to remind everyone to treat any requests for banking or financial information as suspect, and if you feel the need to contact your financial institution, please do so by verifying the contact phone numbers and email address, never reply directly to an email you have received. Scammers are reportedly using the event to trick companies and customers into updating information, to fake or criminal destinations instead. They are also pretending to be companies or vendors (not just pretending to be the banks themselves) who say they are affected and need to update or change where money gets sent to them. (“Our bank failed; you need to send money you owe/pay us here instead.”) Anyone updating bank information or changing things due to bank failures must be careful and verify all transactions (talk to people on the phone using preexisting phone numbers, not ones linked or listed in an email).
We may see a mix of real and fake claims about it. Always remain cyber aware.
