Hello, and welcome back to “Tech Tip Tuesday,” where we give you an inside scoop on all things technology here at ATU! Today’s Tech Tip is all about something extra spooky…phishing.
Phishing is a type of cyber-attack that uses deceptive emails, text messages, or websites to try to gather sensitive information.
Most of the time, the person behind the phishing content is presenting as a reputable company (banks, universities, etc.) in order to trick people into giving them their information.
To double check if something is phishing…
- Be cautious with email links and attachments, especially if you do not know who it is coming from.
- Verify the sender’s credibility. Double-check the email address, and cross-reference it with known and trusted contact information.
- Be wary of emails sent from external senders. This means addresses outside of the university/organization.
- Scrutinize all email content. Look for grammar/spelling mistakes, unusual requests that involve sensitive information or requesting money in any way.
Remember, these attackers want you to be the fish, so be smart and don’t take the bait!
