Reporting an Issue
If having issues with getting connected, connectivity, etc with your devices on ResNet, please don’t hesitate to report your issue to the Campus Support Center in any of the following ways:
- 479-968-0646
- Submit a ticket
Be sure to have the following information ready:
- Your name/username
- The make and model of device or devices you’re having an issue with
- The MAC address for the device or devices (the MAC address is usually different for wired and wireless on a single device so please make sure you collect the appropriate one or both)
- Your building and room number
This information helps us identify the device(s) on the network which in turn can help us identify the issue faster.
Please don’t assume someone else has reported the issue or that we won’t be able to help or won’t attempt to improve the situation. We’re here to help and we can’t fix it if we don’t know about it!
Do’s and Don’ts
Do
- Get a 5ghz or “dual-band” capable wireless device. It may cost a little extra but 5ghz is often superior to the older 2.4ghz wireless and is prone to fewer issues due to interference, congestion, etc.
- Report any issues that you have so the Office of Information Systems can investigate and help get them resolved.
- If you live in Commons, M-Street, or Nutt, download Cisco UDN on your mobile device and register your devices to create your own virtual space on the network. Your devices can see and talk to each other but no one else’s devices can unless invited! Cisco UDN is considered in beta testing on campus right now so please report any issues or feedback you may have.
- Spread the word about this page to anyone who may need it!
Don’t
- Extend the network in any way. No routers or network switches are allowed to be connected to ResNet.
- Run servers from your computers on the network.
- Use a hotspot on your cell phone. If the wifi isn’t working, let us know! Personal hotspots may allow you to connect but it interferes with other wireless in the area which may negatively impact those around you.
- Illegally download movies and/or software.
Getting Connected
The ResNet network has several networks to choose from depending on the type of device you’re using:
Wired – Usually higher bandwidth and reliability. Requires device registration at https://mydevices.atu.edu before connecting. Can be used with any device that has a wired network port. In Commons, M-Street, and Nutt the wired ports are located on the bottom of the Cisco wireless unit mounted on the wall in your room.
ATU-ResNet-5g – 5ghz wifi with 802.1x security. Can be used with any device 5ghz capable device that also supports 802.1x including most:
- Smart Phones
- Laptops
- Tablets
- PCs with wireless
Does not require device registration unless you’re using Cisco UDN in which case you just register your device’s MAC addresses in the Cisco UDN app.
ATU-HomeDevices-5g – 5ghz open wifi. Requires device registration at https://mydevices.atu.edu before connecting. Intended for any device that does not support 802.1x security including but not limited to:
- Media Streaming Devices (Roku, Chromecast, etc)
- Smart TVs
- Game Consoles (Nintendo Switch, Playstation, XBox, etc)
- Home Automation Devices (Amazon Echo, Google Home, Phillips Hue, etc)
If you can’t see the above wireless networks, your device may be 2.4ghz-only or out of range of the 5ghz. The following networks are provided in this case. |
ATU-ResNet – 2.4ghz wifi with 802.1x security. 2.4ghz is often slower than 5ghz and prone to interference and congestion. This wireless is available for the same types of devices that ATU-ResNet-5g lists above that are not 5ghz capable, or are out of range of 5ghz, but still support 802.1x security. Does not require device registration unless you’re using Cisco UDN in which case you just register your device’s MAC addresses in the Cisco UDN app.
ATU-HomeDevices – 2.4ghz open wifi. Requires device registration at https://mydevices.atu.edu before connecting. This wireless is available for the same types of devices that ATU-HomeDevices-5g lists above that are not 5ghz capable, or are out of range of 5ghz, and does not support 802.1x security.
More in-depth instructions on how to connect to these networks can be found by connecting to ATU-ResNetHelp which should prompt you to “sign in” and redirect you to the connection assistance page (if it does not, you can open a web browser and attempt to go to http://connect.atu.edu ).
